Can anybody recommend a trailer for the daysailer?

Postby kellyima » Mon Oct 12, 2009 7:29 pm

Just went to look at the trailer my boat came with, which hasn't been on the road for five years. Didn't look too good for a number of reasons - bent yoke, electric wiring broken, tires a bit shot, etc.

I've only sailed on the Hudson River off a mooring, but am looking to trailer sail next year to the Long Island Sound and the Connecticut River.

I don't need another project and am curious what the cost of a new trailer would be.

Has anybody has bought a new trailer for their daysailer? Could anyone recommend a particular model?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Trailer maintenance may not be as much fun as upgrading the rigging on your boat, but they are rathe simple systems. Rebuilding the electrics, for example hardly qualifies as a "project". I've redone mine several times over the years; because of frequent dunkings they just don't last forever.

Seriously bent parts, are, of course another matter. A while back I've looked at trailer prices for a friend, whose trailer simply can't be fixed anymore and from what I recall, prices were well in excess of what I paid for my boat. For my part, that stopped all considerations of a new trailer.

That said, any trailer that supports the keel, with at least one roller directly underneath the CB, as well as generous bunks for the flat parts of the hull should do. Without the roller under the CB, it can sag. And using rollers, even groups of rollers, to support the flat part of the hull between center line and seats can lead to flexing unless you've stiffened your hull. If you have narrow bunks they should fit right below the edge of the seats for best support.

Load capacity 1,200 to 1,500 lbs.
