a 73 DSII. Dirty! No mast boom or rudder. Found in a field today. There appears to be a sail wadded up in the cuddy. The hull and trailer appear to be in good shape, just filthy. Please help.....must resist.....urge to fix crap up! They say the"long thing" and "short thing" are at the back of the property dumped by the fence. I could'nt find them. I just hate to see a good old sailboat die such a death! What are your thoughts?

I would offer to wash it off to see what the filth is hiding before making an offer. Especially check the condition of the sails. I you have to replace two mice chewed or sun rotted sails, you are looking at $675. Check for rudder $475 and centerboard $459. If you have to replace the mast $880 or boom $350 then you will want to deduct these missing items from an average price for a boat of this vintage of $2000 without a motor. A hull on its own is worth very little perhaps $200, a trailer perhaps $400 depending on condition.

I would offer them something very low. $50 maybe up to 150 if you like the trailer. Check out the hardware. I wouldn't give up searching for the mast & boom. There are many sailboats out there right now that people don't want.

If the sum of the parts exceeds your personal limit consider a couple of other possibilities to save that boat.

The hull design is quite pleasing to the eye. A few cost effective uses of the hull would be to use it as a base for some custom craft such as a gaff rigged sailor with a short mast, add some wood work and possibly a bowsprit. You could cheaply build a very nice classic at modest cost. Another idea is to fix up the hull and use it as a motorized fishing or gunk holing craft. It could also be equipped with oars. Its light and designed to go through the water with minimal effort. Brad

Or tell them that if they give you $50 you'll clear it off their property for them. If they haggle, offer to do it for a Coke.
