Any info or pictures of transom drain?

Postby JGREGORY@PARKER.COM » Sat Jun 05, 2010 10:50 pm

Hi,

The transom drain on my DSII was bondo'd over at some time in the past. It seems that if there was some fitting there before, it was probably removed before the hole was filled.

I was hoping for information regarding the type of fitting/plug originally there. Pictures would be wonderful.

Thank you,

I'm about to run out the door, but I'll try to post pictures tomorrow. On my 1980 DSII, which I'm reasonably sure is original, it's a plastic threaded plug located low down and just to starbord of the centerline. You can get replacement plugs at D&R marine.

Thanks,

I see the fitting and plug on the DR site. I don't know how many times I must have looked right at it and not have it register. I guess I was thinking brass. It looks like the ticket.

Update: There are actually two drain plugs. The cockpit drain is in the center of the transom directly below the lower rudder gudgeon. This has a brass sleeve and a rubber plug. The bilge drain is off to the right. This is the threaded plastic plug.

My 1974 DS II had the original bilge drain covered over with putty and gel coated to match the blue hull. That plug was dead center on the transom, below the cockpit drain and in the lowest part of the transom. It honestly looked like the factory plugged it. There was a bilge drain installed far to starboard in the water line stripe.
I recently removed the putty and installed a new bilge drain which I purchased from DR Marine. The inner hull floor pan was partially blocking the hole that was filled with putty, but the new drain really does a nice job.

Hey, guess what. My 1980 DSII has exactly the same thing - a puttied-over spot directly below the cockpit drain.

It's about the color of automotive body filler, so I'd figured it was done by a previous owner, but it's also about the same color as my hull, and it looks like the hull gelcoat in the middle of the patch.

Two boats having the exact same modification sounds like a factory job to me.

I can never remember how to post pictures on the forum, or I would post the before and after pics. I used a hole saw to drill out the plug and the job to install the new drain plug was painless. You do need to be careful not to drill too far and hit the inner hull, but my hole saw only goes deep enough to remove the plug.

Mine too has the bottom drain covered, and an additional drain (that has also been covered) high on the port side. What size hole saw did you use? It doesen't seem like there could be much clearence between the cockpit floor and the hull.

Thanks,
John

Oh, I just re-read your post about limiting the depth of the hole saw cut.

thanks,
