DS 2 Centerboard

Postby Cal » Sat Sep 19, 2009 5:01 pm

About ready to splash the boat and thought I had better check the CB. On the bottom of the hull there are two aluminum plates that hold a wedge in place. One of my wedges is loose, what is its purpose? Looks as if it might support the bushing above it but it doesn't reach it.

Also my down line for the CB has frayed through two of the three strands of rope where comes out of the CB trunk. Does that require CB removal to replace?

Lastly, with the boat on the trailer there is a rope coming out of leading edge of the CB and going up in the trunk. Looks as if it part of the down line but is a different color. Plus water appears to be seeping out of the rope's hole in the CB - normal? Was on mooring until a few weeks ago.

Thanks

DS II Centerboard

I think your best bet would be to contact Rudy at D&R Marine:
www.drmarine.com/

I just put my DSII up on blocks and pulled the cb bolt and ordered a new one and washers from D&R. Cost almost as much to ship as the parts cost. I think Rudy is in your neck of the country. I don't know much about the DSII's other than what I got from Roger about a year ago.

purpose of the wedge

the wedge holds the bivot studs in place. It is slightly different than a through bolt, but the concept prevents intursion of water into the build.

Snug up the wedge so that it is flush with the bottom of the hull.

the downhaul line you mention does not require the cb to be remove, so that the line can be replace. If it is similar to the DS II the line is embedded in the front lower portion of the cb while it is in the up poistion. A screwdriver will remove the epoxy where the knot of the line is embedded. Replace the line by attaching a longer line taped to the end of the bad line using the bad line to pull the new line through. When that is done, measure the old line, cut the new line to the same length and reattach. Voila! This can be done with the boat on the trailer in your driveway on a nice day.

Water seeping out the uphaul hole intot the cuddy is normal. Water gushes up the front of the cb while sailing and the hole is only about a few inches above the waterline on a good day. Worry if you see no seeping, but at the end of the day your bilge is full of water. It means that the hole between the cb and cuddy has lost the filling in between and water is being allowed to enter the bilge.

With the screws holding the aluminum plate tightened, the wedge is still loose. Do I add a shim to push the wedge higher?

With the CB up and resting on a trailer roller, a rope comes out of the lower forward edge of the CB and goes up into the trunk. The rope is wet, drips, and appears to be a different color/style than the rope coming into the cuddy.

Boat has been out of the water for several weeks and I was surprised at the moisture from the CB.
