hatch installation in forward cuddy bulkhead

Postby gplankca » Mon Jul 23, 2007 10:01 pm

I would like to install a large (11x15) inspection port...OK, inspection hatch... in the forward bulkhead so that I can inspect/replace the blocks of styrofoam in there. However I am wondering if such a large opening will weaken the boat structurally.

It would be nice to be able to cram life vests, spare parts, new foam, etc. up in the bow.

forward locker

I put a large hatch in my DS II but instead of having to crawl through the cuddy to access it, I mounted it on deck. I used it for an anchor well. Just remember that any floataion you remove should be replaced elsewhere.

Here is the link to my 11x15 lockable waterproof hatch.

It was purchased from a Boating Store dealer, (Discount Marine Catalog) and the product was made by TH marine (product number 232-HATL11152) for $66. These are readily available at any marine store.

It did not weaken the structure in any way. I also checked with the class measurer to ensure that it was within the class rules. (no problem)

E-mail me (roger02@mts.net) if you want more pictures, but I get the sense from your post that you already have this hatch in mind.

Thanks Roger - Yes, I have all the pictures of your gorgeous anchor locker....but I finally decided I'm too squeamish to cut into the deck, so I thought I would put the same hatch through the bulkhead.

My purpose is mainly to make sure the floatation is up to snuff...my boat does not have the thick plug of foam that yours does, rather it (apparently) has some rather loose blocks of white styrofoam. But honestly, I don't really know what's up there in the bow. Maybe there's nothing but air space?
