Daysailer 1 vs. Daysailer 2

I purchased a new set of sails that I intend to use for racing. The first thing I did was roll them out on the lawn to check the measurements, and they checked out exactly right.
Next I looked at them on the boat. I stepped and tried to tune the rig following the guide, but had to do allot of modifications to make the sails fit my Daysailer 2 properly.
First thing I noticed is that the old mast that came with the boat only measured 14'1" ! With the mast stepped, the main did not quite fit to the class legal position (the boom should ride 24" above the mast/deck datum line. I removed the shackle, and used a stop not on the head board of the main, and gained a few more inches of hoist, but I finally had to remove the mast butt and set it on 3 stacked 2x4 blocks lag bolted to the deck, and add shroud extenders, and relocate some hardware to get the sail to fit correctly. Next, I realized that my combination twing and barber haulers could not be mounted far enough aft for the jib sheets to be hauled in at the proper angle. I still haven't figured how to set up barber haulers on the shorter Daysailer 2 deck, so if anyone has any Ideas, please advise

The DS II masts as supplied by the manufacturer are shorter than the class maximum not only the part below the cuddy but the part above. The boom height above mast datum is a maximum of 24" and while this is ideal it is the max and less is legal although not the optimal. Good luck.

how do daysailer 2 racers set up the barber hauls????????????????????????????????/

Back when I had a DSII, I set up barber Haulers. It was simple actually. I just used 2...what are those cleats that don't have any moving parts and are sort of V shaped that you wedge the sheets into? Well anyway, I used 2 of them, the type with the little bit that goes over the top so the line doesn't come out. I mounted them on the cabin top at the appropriate angles. The one for the port barber hauler just to starboard of the center, and visa-versa. It worked just fine, and actually I have a very similar setup on my DSI now.

The clew of the new North jib, is slightly longer than my cabin top. If I mount a barber hauler on the cabin, won't it screw up the sheeting angle, and change the luff of the sail so that all the tell tails won't break at the same time? A barber hauler should pull the sheet sideways, but if it is mounted behind the clew, won't it also pull BACK on the clew and screw up the sail shape a little?

I would agree on your assessment of the angle of pull. One option may be to have the barber hauler exit from the back of the cuddy either with a thru-deck fairlead or thru-deck block. The control end could cross the interior of the cuddy and exit thru the cuddy again to the opposite side. It looks like you will simply have to do some trial and error on this one. Good luck.

Mike,

I also have a daysailer II which I set up for racing. I used 2 clamcleats mounted on the face of either side of the cabin hole opening which work out fine. The tracks for the jib sheets are mounted on the cockpit coamings with Harken camcleats on the centerboard trunk. The class jib, I beleive, is a 110. It should extend just slightly beyond the mast, I am not sure how yours is extending beyond the cabin house. Did you buy a genoa? (like a 150).

I bought the North one design racing sail. If I remember the foot of the jib is supposed to be about 7 feet maximum, and i checked my jib to make sure it was up to the maximum allowed by the class rules. the sail appears to extend a few inches beyond the daysailer 2 cuddy edge..

Take a look at the rigging guide in the Technical Info area of this website. Phil Root has taken some photos of his boat and even though it is a DS I the barber haulers end up in the same spot (2nd photo). I hope this helps
