the usual leak problem

Postby magooza » Wed Sep 08, 2004 7:44 pm

I have a 73 daysailer II and love it. Problem is, I want to moor it and can't due to the amount of water it takes on during a typical two- hour sail. I suspect it is coming from the area of the centerboard. I've read all the discussions on here, but does anybody know if there is an available schematic or such thing to assist a novice. Love the boat, don't want to get rid of it.
Thanks.

Try the following two links for info regarding the cb rigging setup, and a fix for the cb uphaul line leak.

The good news is that I left my boat at anchor during a storm this past weekend. The bilge had filled overnight (presumabley from the notorious cd pivot bolt), and water was up to the level of the inspection ports by morning. I had left the top mooring drain open, so there was also about 5 inches of water in the cockpit, sloshing in and out of the drain.

How can that be good news you ask... Well the boat was bobbing happily at it's waterline in two foot waves, even though it was full of water. It took about 20 minutes to bail both the sump and bilge with a hand pump.

I wouldn't worry about leaving it at a mooring, just because it leaks, it will still float full of water. Just make sure to keep the top mooring drain open so that any rainwater runs out.

I have done the retrofit fix to the uphaul, but that wasn't the source of the leak, so I am going to tackle the rubber washers at the cb pivot bolt next.

Here are those two links:

I did my retrofit with plastic plumbing (a one inch threaded nipple) instead of the brass pipe indicated in the article. The nipple I used had about an inch of threading at one end and a hex nut at the other. It was easy to thread in, then tighten down with a wrench.

Check the 4th picture on page one for a cb rigging diagram. Also check page two to see pictures of the inner hull/bilge area.

Keep posting as you attempt your fix. This is one leak, I'd like to fix as well.

I have a similar leak. It is a relatively fast leak even while at rest, so I concluded mine wasn't from the cb line hole either although I siliconed the small gap in there. It is nice to know that the boat still floats even with a full bilge.
