shorten rigging vs shim mast foot

Last fall the rigging snapped and the mast came down while Daysailer II was under was under way. The base of the mast was twisted and torn. I shorten the mast and ordered new rigging from D&R Marina. Now after the mast is stepped there is too much play in the rigging. Question is "do I have the rigging shortened or can one shim the mast foot at the floor of the cuddy?"

I assume that you have a one piece mast that goes through the cuddy roof to the floor. If this is the case, something you may want to consider is purchasing a hinged tabernacle through D&R. You will have to of course cut your mast again, just above the cuddy roof to install the tabernacle between the two pieces. You will then have the advantage of a hinged mast, but this will also re extend the mast about an inch.

When my mast broke at the cuddy roof, (previous owner) I lost about 6 inches of height on the mast. A tabernacle was installed as was shorter rigging.

I recently installed a hinged step on my DS-1. It is part number D2112H(p) at Dwyer Mast Company. This is used with a DM 284 mast section. Cost around $55.00. It installed easily and required about 1 1/2" to be removed from the overall length of the mast. Sounds like just the thing for you. http://www.dwyermast.com/MASTS/dm284.htm
