hinged mast

Postby Guest » Tue Mar 18, 2003 11:17 pm

Hi

I just purchased a DS II and am a little confused about the hinged mast. What does the lower portion of the mast (the part beneath the cuddy) look like. The part supplied to me looks like a piece of galvanized pipe about an 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. It seems like it will be held in place by some set screws in the tabernacle. I this right or should the lower portion be mast extrusion like the top.

On my ds 2 the lower portion is made from mast stock, same color, same size and shape. It fits into a mast step which looks like a cast aluminum plate with a 1/2 inch lip around the edge. It is screwed into place on the sole of the cuddy. I think there may be a set screw on the side. The top comes through the mast partner (hole in the cuddy roof) and about an inch above the cuddy there is a plate that matches the base of the mast. This link shows the that plate. http://groups.msn.com/RogerConrad/daysa ... PhotoID=40

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the lower part inside the cuddy. Feel free to look around this site, it is public domain.

the lower section of my mast is mast stock too, although it goes through the sole and seems to attach to the keel line. all DSIIs i've seen have this set up. mine is a '74.

I have an early DS1, but similar problem. Boat came with mast cut about 1" above deck line. Bottom section was apparently mislaid. I will get mast hindge which will suit me fine. Had thoughts about trying to get matching section to go to keel, but plan now is to use a piece of 2x4, from keel up to deck level, shaped to resemble mast and paint it aluminum. Will drill hindge to allow a couple of SS. screws down vertically into the 2x4., or use 1/2" ply plate on top of 2x4, to match hindge base plate if necessary.
