hi all,
does anyone know were to get replacement standing rigging for '74 Day sailor II? Particularly, the head stay and side stays.

I also got a set of stays from D&R. They have upgraded the originals from 1/8" stainless wire to 3/16". Mine have stay adjusters, for getting the proper tension, and I think full turnbuckles are available for more money.

The adjusters are fine but less easy to work than the turnbuckles would be. Thankfully, making those adjustments is a sometime thing.

My DS1 has a mast jack and no other adjustments. The rigging was re-done at a local shop under a previous owner (who passed on the receipt). I may be due for a replacement, but the swaging shop is no longer. Because the stays cannot be adjusted individually, it's critical in this case to get a precise length. The setup I have works (mast rake is fine and helm balanced) so now I'll be hunting for another local shop. Shouldn't be that difficult as the marine sector is well represented around here.

I also got my replacement stays from D&R. I upgraded to the 1/8" stays as well.

Do you think my current spreaders will fit the 3/16 wire? my spreaders are fine so I didn't consider replacing.....

The original stays are 3/32", the upgraded are 1/8" not 3/16". I upgraded my spreaders as well to the heavy duty spreaders. They work with both the original 3/32" stays and the heavier 1/8" stays. The heavy duty spreaders have a thicker wall thickness on the tube and a squared end at the mast bracket attachment.

I did the same as John, replacing the rigging with the new 1/8" stays and a new set of spreaders. In three years I repaired and made new spreaders several times. They just kept breaking on me when I raised the mast if the stay didn't slide through just right. I had been making them from soft aluminum tubing from Home Depot that had a wall thickness that "looked" like it should have been more than enough, but experience dictated otherwise. I brought this up with Rudy at D&R when I was ordering the stays and he told me to just go for the heavy duty spreaders he sold. He said I'd never break them--and he was right! Very durable spreaders and the square end makes them fit perfectly in the bracket. The secret is not in the thickness but in the alloy they are made of.

If I were you I would replace them now while you are taking the rest of the rigging off. Inspect all your rivets in your brackets and chain plates (well, whatever you call the blade shaped pieces that are riveted to the mast), too and re-rivet anything that looks less than solid. If you can spare the dough, go for the stays with the full turn buckle. As has been stated already, the ones with the adjusters work well enough, (those are the ones I bought) but you will save a lot of thumb-skin by going with the full turnbuckle.

Once you're finished with all of that, you'll have complete piece of mind in your rig. It's a great feeling!

Oops! Please pardon the mis-information regarding the stay thicknesses. My thinking has been fractional lately... kind of like our rigs!

I replaced my standing rigging with the upgraded stays from DR. I found that the clevis pins on the upgrade were too large for the original deck hardware so I ordered two new headstay stemheads and mounted them on port and starboard coamings. Also followed the recomended upgrade of 1 inch SS tube upgrade under the coaming to spread the load of the rigging.
Have one full season with this upgrade and it has performed just fine. Much easier to tune the rigging with the improved turnbuckles. Money well spent!
