The plastic O'Day name badge on my 1977 DSII is pretty faded and I am thinking about touching up the color on it. It looks like it was a blue color.

I haven't seen any good color photos of new badges, so I don't really know what the original color was.

I am actually thinking of changing the color to black, as the blue color doesn't really match the other colors on the boat.

Does anyone know what the original color was? Any thoughts on switching colors?

My thoughts on that general topic (based on what I would do if I had the boats) are:

DSI: Keep it as purely original as possible, and if you find a neglected orphan, restore it to original condition, then race it.

DSII: More of a cruiser and less of a racer than the DSI, so feel free to set it up to emphasize day sails. The badge color? Not to worry. jdoorly and hectoretc on this board have gone waaay beyond that, when it comes to changes from original.

DSIII: A very sound, practical boat. High freeboard aft, therefore dry. Looks like a keelboat. Original appearance, including badge color, probably doesn't matter.

My DS1 had some kind of turquoise gelcoat for decks and seats (or some color like that - visible only in areas where later paint has rubbed off).

No way am I going to restore that color. The paint job was much more tasteful and if anything, I'm going to "restore" to that when the deck's due for a new coat.

Certain colors don't go with wood-trim, no matter what the fashionable colors of the moment might be. For a DS2 you don't have that issue, so you are free to pick any color scheme.

Something that uses matching colors would be more likely to appeal to a later owner, when the time comes, than something that's "true" to something the factory thought was in demand.

The badge on my DS2 appears to have been blue.
