I just bought my first daysailer

Hello everyone,
I am also about to buy my first DaySailer. Going to look at a 1980 model (does that make it a DSII?) on the weekend and if it looks as good in real life as it does on the internet, I will put my money down. It comes without a mainsail, and, from what I've read on your excellent forums, the mainsail needs to be 6.5m luff and 3m foot. (I'm in Australia so I apologise for the metrics - 20' luff and 9' foot?). Is that about right?
Anyway, I'm excited at getting my first proper sailboat. I have an 11' rowing dinghy that can take a sail, but it weighs 100 pounds and I weigh double that, so things can get wobbly pretty quick.
There are not many O'Day DaySailers out here, but I reckon I can get by with help from this forum.
Cheers!

AussieJ, there was a thread not too long ago about a DS Downunder that had changed hands a few times in short order. As I recall, it had a metal CB for one thing. A quick search should turn it up.
1980 would most probably make it a DS2. Your mainsail dimensions are pretty spot on. If you can find a sailmaker there that can make up a main for you, great, if not, check out Intensity Sails. Great prices, but shipping to Australia might be a bit pricey?
Please post as many pics you can of the boat - oftentimes that is the only thing folks on here have to go by in order to help you with your questions ... ;-P

The precise maximum measurements from the class handbook are 20' 6" luff and 10' 0" foot - however, these are at the maximum stretch. I don't know what the values would be to give to the sailmaker.

Thanks for your replies. I looked at the DS on the weekend. I think it is the same one with the metal CB that you mentioned,Tim. I have read the thread relating to that boat, and maybe it is the same one. I will try to put some photos up. The guy bought it a year ago as a bit of a wreck and has almost finished fixing it, but has run out of time, money and spousely tolerance. He has put some nice oak coaming in, plus a solar panel, done a heap of fibreglassing etc. still needs some work though. Is a metal CB a big no-no? I looked for numbers on the transom but could find none.

That is Day Sailer I instead of a Day Sailer II. Looks to be in pretty good shape.

As this is about a DS1, I've split it from the orginal topic and started a new one in the DS1 section.

Thanks for your comments. I've been reading up on the DS 1. Lots to learn.I'm going to take a few weeks to decide about buying the DaySailer, as we are selling our farm and moving to Tasmania next year. Lots of water and wind down there, so we have to decide whether or not to buy it here, or hope to get something similar down there. It's a long way to haul a trailer - about 1100 miles, including an overnight ferry.
