Rig tension

Postby Kevin F » Mon Jun 30, 2008 2:52 pm

I upgraded my stays to 1/8 inch wire and am prepairing to tension the rig with a Loos tension guage. I tried to sail with 160 lbs on the stays and 120 on the forestay, in 15kts wind. The leeward stay was floppping around the deck like a fish. Readjusted to 200 lbs on the stays and 150 on the forestay but as of now I have not had the chance to sail with that set up.

The question is,... is 200 lbs and 150 lbs too much?

Also the rig is straight ( side to side (+/-1/4 inch)and rake is 25'2'' as indicated in the North Sails write up.

Here is a link from Doyle sailmakers. I know that one of the Doyles was involved in racing Daysailers at one time. I do not know how valid or current this information is, but he specifically mentions the same gauge you discussed in your post.

Hope that helps.
