DaySailer 1 Spindrift

Postby Greg Kline » Mon Sep 26, 2005 3:32 pm

After some period of watching a daysailer 1 deteriorating in a power boat dealers lot I finally went in and made a silly offer which he took so I now own the boat. It is a Spindrift from '84 or 5 and not in too bad shape. I have some questions about how it is rigged which I hope someone can help with. I have downloaded the manual and compared it and there are a number of differences. The gooseneck is screwed to the mast and doesn't go up and down in the track. The boom is missing the back piece (anyone know a source?) and there is no rear block for the sheet. There is no evidence on the boom that there ever was a rear block, ie no holes etc.. It appears to have been sailed with only the forward block and the block on the CB trunk. There is no traveler hardware anywhere except there are 2 U type fittings on the top corners of the transom??? There is what I would call a boom vang (and fairly elaborate at that) but no apparent place in the boat to anchor the lower end. There is only one self bailer(new Large type) forward of the CB trunk on the port side. (Iam replacing the gasket and reinstalling which I think will work because it leaks like a sieve). Seems to me from my childhood days that there should be one on each side or do we only bail on the port tack?? Are there things worth the trouble or should I just fill it in? There are two roughly 1/2 " keyhole type slots on the sides of the mast step, one towards the front of the step and the one on the other side is towards the back of the step. Any ideas? Maybe for fastening hiking straps? If so where do I fasten the aft ends?I am in process of making a rudder as the one from the boat was "lost" so I am in no rush. Fortunately I have my widgeon to sail in the meantime. Any help will be appreciated. Greg K.

I also have a Spindrift DS 1 which is nicely setup. I live in Worcester, MA and sail In Webster if you would like to lookat the boat and see how it is set up.

The Sprindrift model you have came with a mid boom mainsheet. It sounds like someone jury riiged the boom...probably after the gooseneck broke.
